A message from the Operations Director
Inspection is an engineering judgement, not a formality
Since QIL was incorporated in 2018, our purpose has been to give Ugandan industry independent, locally based inspection, lifting and rigging competence. After more than 22 years in the oil and gas lifting industry, I know that most lifting incidents trace back to the same causes: equipment past its examination date, accessories worn beyond discard criteria, and operators and riggers who were never properly assessed.
Our thorough examinations follow LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998, at the statutory intervals of six months for lifting accessories and equipment used to lift people and twelve months for other lifting equipment, or sooner under a written scheme. Wire ropes and slings are assessed against BS EN 12385 and BS EN 13414, and our NDT (MPI, DPT, UT, VT and RT) is carried out to the applicable BS EN and ASME standards with calibrated, traceable instruments.
Every report states exactly what we found, with defects graded and actions assigned. No result is changed for pressure or payment. Our training courses end in a theory paper and a practical assessment, so a certificate from QIL means the candidate has shown competence, not just attended.
Our Integrated Management System is aligned to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 and is awaiting certification. We are moving to Bexel digital reporting so that every certificate is traceable, and we are working towards LEEA membership in 2027.
